Stump Grinding & Removal Services
Complete stump elimination with professional grinding equipment and cleanup
Professional Stump Grinding Equipment
After a tree is removed, the remaining stump can be an eyesore, safety hazard, and obstacle to landscaping plans. At Kirkland Tree Service, we use state-of-the-art stump grinding equipment to completely eliminate stumps of any size, from small ornamental trees to massive old-growth specimens that can be over 6 feet in diameter.
Our fleet includes both self-propelled and tow-behind stump grinders capable of accessing tight spaces and challenging terrain. The largest grinder in our fleet can handle stumps up to 36 inches above ground and grind 24 inches below ground level, ensuring complete root system elimination.
Did you know that tree stumps can take 10-20 years to decompose naturally? During this time, they attract termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-boring insects that can eventually target your home's structure. Professional stump grinding eliminates this risk immediately while freeing up valuable yard space.

Complete Root System Elimination
Surface-level stump removal only addresses part of the problem. Tree root systems can extend 2-3 times beyond the tree's canopy width, and major structural roots often extend 15-20 feet from the trunk. Our grinding process eliminates the stump and major root flare, preventing regrowth and eliminating tripping hazards.
We grind stumps 6-12 inches below ground level, which is deep enough to prevent regrowth while allowing for immediate replanting or lawn installation. For customers planning to build structures over the former stump location, we can grind even deeper to ensure proper soil compaction.
Many tree species, including maples, willows, and poplars, are notorious for sending up new shoots from remaining root systems. Our thorough grinding process eliminates this problem, saving you from years of dealing with unwanted saplings sprouting throughout your yard.
Cleanup and Mulch Production
Stump grinding produces a significant amount of wood chips and mulch – typically 2-4 cubic yards per average stump. Rather than viewing this as waste, we see it as a valuable byproduct that can benefit your landscape. The fresh wood chips make excellent mulch for flower beds, around trees, and in garden paths.
We always clean up all debris and rake the area smooth, but many customers choose to keep some or all of the wood chips for landscaping use. Fresh chips are perfect for suppressing weeds, retaining soil moisture, and gradually improving soil structure as they decompose.
For customers who don't want the wood chips, we'll haul them away completely, leaving the area ready for immediate seeding, sodding, or replanting. We can also mix quality topsoil into the ground area to ensure proper drainage and root development for new plantings.
